Management and Dissemination of the European project “Rainbow”, which was presented and implemented at the Multipurpose Municipal Centre of Nicosia.
The project’s purpose was to accomodate children aged 5-12 who are residing within the municipal limits of Nicosia and come from different nationalities (non-Cypriots too). Participation priority to the program was given to children from families of lower socio-economic strata, with further priority to children of single-parent families and familities of 3 or more children.
The aim of the project was the partial provision of childcare, especially during school days, providing creative activities and childcare services. These services indirectly covered the women’s needs as well, since they either had to make time from their busy schedule for childcare, or they were wishing to enter the labor market.
Moreover, the main objective of the project was to create equal opportunities for underprivileged children by providing them with educational and recreational activities, which they would not have access to otherwise. Among other things, school teachers offered support in classroom subjects, and activities took place such as gymnastics, dance, theater courses, educational tours, and lectures on equality, multiculturalism, Cypriot customs and traditions etc.
The Rainbow project was active for a period of 11 months, from October 2009 to August 2010. The initiative was taken by the Multipurpose Center in Nicosia, with the support and sponsorship of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, through the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area (EEA), the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and the Republic of Cyprus.
