These concepts reflect a growing interest in tourism models that go beyond sustainability – models that restore, uplift, and empower local communities while offering visitors deeper, more meaningful engagement with place. Through creative co-design processes, local producers, guides, tourism professionals, and cultural actors contributed their insights to shape experiences that celebrate Cyprus’ identity and strengthen community wellbeing.

“Hop-On Hop-Off Mountain Villages of Larnaca”

One of the most exciting outcomes was the development of the Hop-On Hop-Off Mountain Villages of Larnaca experience, a fresh concept that applies the well-known hop-on hop-off format in a rural and community-driven context. Designed to connect a network of mountain villages, the route allows visitors to discover the cultural richness, traditions, and natural beauty of the Larnaca region in a flexible and immersive way.

At each stop, travellers would be invited to engage with authentic local experiences such as:

traditional craft demonstrations

food and wine tastings

village walks and storytelling sessions

workshops with local artisans or family-run businesses

The concept supports cross-village collaboration, encourages shared branding efforts, and creates new opportunities for young rural entrepreneurs to showcase their work. Importantly, it also aligns with environmental goals by promoting collective transport instead of multiple private vehicles, reducing the footprint of tourism activity in the region.

Enhanced “Blue Lagoon Tour”

The second outcome focuses on upgrading the existing Blue Lagoon Tour, one of Cyprus’ most popular coastal excursions. Rather than creating an entirely new product, stakeholders explored how this well-established tour could be redesigned to generate greater value for local communities and the natural environment.

The enhanced version introduces several enrichments, including:

the integration of local gastronomy through small tastings or traditional snacks

cultural and historical storytelling that deepens the visitor’s connection to the region

responsible tourism elements encouraging respect for marine ecosystems

collaboration with small producers and local guides to diversify income opportunities

Through these additions, the tour transforms from a primarily scenic activity into an experience that offers learning, authenticity, and meaningful local engagement. It represents a shift toward tourism that gives back, supporting the environment, local businesses, and the broader community.

A Step Forward for Regenerative Tourism in Cyprus

Together, these two co-created concepts demonstrate the potential of regenerative tourism to shape the future of Cyprus’s tourism offer. By drawing on local culture, strengthening community identity, and involving stakeholders throughout the design process, the experiences embrace a more holistic approach to tourism development. They highlight how Cyprus can position itself as a destination where visitors not only enjoy the island’s beauty but also contribute to the resilience and vitality of the communities they encounter.

As part of the AGORA Project, stakeholders from across Cyprus collaborated to design and refine two new tourism experience concepts rooted in regenerative principles.
